Omega-3 fish oil for lifters: the complete guide

Section guide by George Thomas. Updated 31 August 2026. New answers are added to this list as they are published.

Fish oil is bought on one number, EPA plus DHA per softgel, not the 1000mg of oil on the front. The authorised heart claim needs 250mg a day; one softgel giving 300mg clears it. Everything else is research.

What lifters actually ask about omega-3

How much EPA and DHA is in a softgel. Whether fish oil helps joints, soreness or recovery. Whether to take it with food, before or after training, or with creatine. Ethyl ester against triglyceride. How to avoid fishy burps. Whether a product is tested for heavy metals. Each becomes one page here, answered first and worked through second.

The numbers that matter

Fish oil per softgel, EPA per softgel, DHA per softgel, and the sum of the last two. The claim thresholds: 250mg EPA+DHA a day for the normal function of the heart; 250mg DHA a day for normal brain function and vision, which most 1000mg softgels do not reach on their own. Softgels per day, then price divided by days.

The worked example

Every page in this section uses Futuro Labs Omega 3 Fish Oil as the reference: 1000mg fish oil per mini softgel with 180mg EPA and 120mg DHA, 300mg combined, 1 softgel a day, 90 softgels for £14.99, 17p a day, UK made, lab tested for purity. The label is worked through on its own page below.
