The evidence, both trials on the table
ZMA has exactly two trials. Brilla and Conte's 2000 study, run with the formula's patent holder as an author, reported higher testosterone, IGF-1 and strength in American footballers over eight weeks; it was never replicated. Wilborn's 2004 independent trial gave 42 resistance-trained men ZMA or placebo through eight weeks of training and found no difference in strength, body composition, or anabolic and catabolic hormones. That is the entire ZMA record: one positive study from the seller, one null study from outside. Magnesium glycinate makes no hormone promise to test; its case is the mineral's authorised claims, normal muscle function, protein synthesis, energy metabolism, tiredness reduction, delivered at a dose that actually reaches them, plus the athlete trials at 350mg that found better jump performance and less soreness where intake had been low.
The doses, held against the UK numbers
Classic ZMA's nightly serving is 30mg of zinc, 450mg of magnesium as aspartate and 10.5mg of B6. The zinc sits above the 25mg a day guidance level the Expert Group on Vitamins and Minerals set for supplements, taken every night by lifters whose diets mostly cover zinc already; long-term excess interferes with copper absorption, which is why the level exists. The B6 sits at the 10mg guidance level exactly. The magnesium is the defensible part and even that is often downgraded to oxide in UK copies. Glycinate's serving is 300mg elemental at 80% NRV and nothing else, under every ceiling, with the zinc question left to a separate 10mg to 15mg product for the narrow eaters who genuinely need one.
