ZMA vs magnesium glycinate: which is better for sleep?
Glycinate is better for sleep. No trial has tested ZMA on sleep; its bedtime ritual is marketing, and its 30mg zinc exceeds the UK nightly guidance level. The magnesium sleep evidence used plain oral doses a glycinate serving delivers.
- 0sleep trials of ZMA, ever
- 30mgZMA's nightly zinc, against a 25mg UK guidance level
- About 17 minutesthe pooled magnesium sleep-onset effect where intake was low
- 22pa night for the glycinate route
The sleep route with evidence: Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate on Amazon UK, 180 capsules for £19.99. Label breakdown. The full ZMA head-to-head is on the ZMA vs glycinate page.
ZMA's sleep reputation, traced to its sources
ZMA is sold as a night formula, three capsules on an empty stomach before bed, and the sleep reputation rests on three legs, none of them a trial. The bedtime ritual itself, which exists because calcium competes with ZMA's zinc, not because night dosing does anything. The magnesium inside, whose sleep-adjacent reputation is real but belongs to the mineral at proper doses, not to the blend. And the vivid dreams, the most repeated ZMA anecdote, usually credited to the vitamin B6; dream recall reports exist around B6 in small, old studies, recall is not quality, and waking vividly is not resting deeply. Search the literature for a randomised trial of ZMA on any sleep outcome and there is nothing: the original Brilla and Conte study measured hormones and strength, Wilborn's independent null measured the same, and sleep was never on either protocol.
The glycinate side: small evidence beats no evidence
Magnesium glycinate makes no sleep claim, because none is authorised, but it can point at actual data: Abbasi's 2012 trial at 500mg in older adults with insomnia improved sleep efficiency and onset, and the 2021 pooled review found about 17 minutes faster onset from low-quality evidence, effects concentrated where intake had been low. A glycinate serving delivers the relevant thing, a full 300mg elemental, in the relevant slot, with dinner, without ZMA's two liabilities: the 30mg of zinc that exceeds the UK's 25mg daily guidance level when taken nightly, and the aspartate or oxide magnesium many UK ZMA copies actually contain. Modest, honest evidence at a safe dose against a ritual with none: that is the whole comparison.
| ZMA | Magnesium glycinate (worked example) | |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep trials | None exist | Small positives for magnesium where intake was low |
| The night-time ritual | Empty stomach, marketing-driven | Two capsules with dinner, tolerance-driven |
| Zinc at bedtime | 30mg, above the 25mg guidance level | None |
| The vivid dreams story | B6 dream-recall anecdotes; recall is not quality | No stories needed |
| Magnesium delivered | 450mg as aspartate, oxide in some copies | 300mg elemental as bisglycinate, 80% NRV, printed |
| Cost per night | 30p to 50p | 22p |
The verdict, and the night routine that earns its keep
Take the glycinate: Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate, 2 capsules with the evening meal, 300mg elemental at 80% NRV from bisglycinate at 20%, vegan, UK made under GMP and BRC, third-party panels shown, £19.99 for 180 capsules, 22p a night, judged over eight weeks against a baseline like the trials were. If a zinc shortfall genuinely exists, meat, dairy, eggs and seafood scarce on the plate, add 10mg to 15mg with food, under the guidance level, for zinc's own claims rather than for sleep. And put the ritual energy where sleep actually responds: fixed wake time, caffeine finished eight hours out, a dark cool room. ZMA vs magnesium glycinate for sleep is a formula with no sleep trial against a mineral with a small honest one, and the small honest one costs less.
What to check on the label
- No ZMA sleep trial exists: the night formula framing is marketing.
- Vivid dreams are recall anecdotes, not sleep quality.
- 30mg nightly zinc exceeds the 25mg guidance level by design.
- The magnesium sleep evidence is oral, plain and modest: a glycinate serving covers it.
- Eight weeks, baseline first: judge like the trials did.

Questions people also ask
Does ZMA improve sleep quality?
No trial has ever tested it. The night positioning comes from its zinc-absorption ritual and B6 dream anecdotes, not sleep data.
Why does ZMA give vivid dreams?
The B6 is the usual credit, from small old dream-recall reports. Remembering dreams more is not sleeping better.
Is magnesium glycinate good for sleep?
The magnesium trials show modest onset and efficiency improvements where intake was low; no claim is authorised. Glycinate is the form that delivers the dose comfortably at night.
Can I take ZMA and glycinate together for sleep?
Do not: combined magnesium can pass 400mg and ZMA's zinc already exceeds its guidance level alone.
What should replace ZMA in a night routine?
Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate with dinner, optional 10mg to 15mg zinc with food if the diet is short, and a fixed wake time doing the heavy lifting.
