Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate: label, dose and cost per day

What one serving gives you, worked through

The front of the bottle says 750mg and 180 capsules. The nutrition panel says a serving is 2 capsules and gives 300mg of elemental magnesium at 80% of the nutrient reference value. The ingredients line says magnesium bisglycinate 20%. Those three numbers agree once you do the arithmetic: 750mg of bisglycinate per capsule, 1500mg per serving, and 20% of 1500mg is 300mg of magnesium. The NRV for magnesium on UK labels is 375mg, and 300 divided by 375 is 80%. That is the whole label, and it is the reason this product is the worked example across the magnesium section: the elemental figure is printed, it is a full dose, and it is consistent.

The label, line by line

Cost per day, worked out

£19.99 for 180 capsules at 2 a day is 90 servings. £19.99 divided by 90 is 22.2p, so 22p a day for 300mg of elemental magnesium as glycinate. The same product also comes as a 90 capsule pouch at £9.99, which is 45 days at the same 22p a day if you want to try it first. On Amazon UK both are sold by Futuro Labs and delivered by Amazon. The comparison that matters is cost per elemental milligram: at 22p for 300mg, that is about 7p per 100mg, which is where a glycinate should sit and below most citrate products that give less.

Testing and where it is made

The listing publishes the independent test panel for the product: microbiological tests for total viable count, yeast and mould, E. coli, salmonella and staphylococcus all passed; heavy metal tests for lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium and total heavy metals all passed. It is made in the UK under GMP and BRC certification, and the label carries the company name and address: Futuro Lab Supplements Ltd, 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9JQ. Under the UK Food Supplements Regulations this label is the legal contract with you, so an address and a shown test panel are worth more than any badge.

Who it suits, who should check first

The capsule shell is vegetarian and the product is listed as vegan, gluten free and sugar free. The label directions are 2 capsules a day, preferably with a meal, and not more than 6 in any 24 hours. The label also says not to use it if you are pregnant, nursing or taking other medications without checking, and to keep it out of reach of children. For a lifter, 2 capsules with the evening meal is the simplest routine; 1 capsule gives 150mg if you want a lighter dose on rest days.

What magnesium is allowed to say in the UK: it contributes to normal muscle function, normal protein synthesis, normal energy-yielding metabolism, electrolyte balance, normal psychological function, the normal functioning of the nervous system, a reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and the maintenance of normal bones and teeth. That wording is the honest limit of any magnesium product, this one included.

The ingredients line, excipient by excipient

Magnesium bisglycinate leads the ingredients as the heaviest component. The capsule shell is hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, HPMC, the standard vegan capsule material, which is what makes the product suitable for vegetarians and vegans. The remaining excipients are the standard processing pair, a flow agent so the powder fills capsules evenly and an anti-caking agent so it does not clump, used in milligram amounts. There is no gelatin, no gluten-containing ingredient, no dairy and no added sugar. The glycine in the chelate is the amino acid the magnesium is bound to, a normal dietary component; at these amounts it is a tolerability feature, not a glycine dose in its own right.

The warnings, taken seriously

The label carries the standard lines and one that matters more than it looks. Food supplements should not replace a varied diet; do not exceed the stated dose; keep out of reach of children. And: do not use with other medications without consulting a healthcare professional first. Magnesium can affect the absorption timing of some medicines, and a pharmacist can answer the spacing question for your specific prescriptions in a minute; pregnancy and breastfeeding get the same ask-first advice. The stated dose keeps supplemental intake at 300mg, under the 400mg a day guidance level from the UK safety review, which is why exceeding it buys nothing except the laxative territory this form was chosen to avoid.
