Which magnesium is best for anxiety?

No form of magnesium is proven to treat anxiety. For everyday stress around training, magnesium glycinate at 300mg elemental a day is the best tolerated option; taurate and threonate cost more without better evidence. See a GP for persistent anxiety.

  • Noneauthorised anxiety claims for magnesium in the UK
  • 300mgelemental per 2 capsules, glycinate
  • 9% vs 20%elemental content, taurate vs the worked example
  • 22pa day, Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate

Worked example: Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate on Amazon UK, 180 capsules for £19.99. This page is about supplement labels and research, not treatment; persistent anxiety belongs with a GP.

What the research shows

Boyle, Lawton and Dye's 2017 systematic review is the reference point. Across 18 studies, magnesium showed a suggestive effect on subjective anxiety and stress, strongest in people prone to low magnesium, but the trials were small, short and mostly low quality, and the authors called for better ones. Pickering's 2020 review sets out the mechanism as a loop between stress and magnesium loss. That is the whole evidence base: plausible, thin, and nowhere near a treatment claim. The authorised wording in the UK is that magnesium contributes to normal psychological function and the normal functioning of the nervous system.

For a lifter, the practical translation is simple. Training hard raises magnesium losses, poor sleep and stress raise them further, and a low intake makes everything feel worse. Keeping intake at the reference level is worth doing. Expecting it to fix anxiety is not.

Dose, timing and what to expect

Take 300mg of elemental magnesium a day with food, in the evening if sleep is part of the picture. The worked example is Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate: 2 capsules give 1500mg bisglycinate at 20%, which is 300mg elemental and 80% of the NRV, for 22p a day from a 180 capsule bottle at £19.99. Vegan, UK made under GMP and BRC certification, independently tested for heavy metals. Give it six to eight weeks, the length of the trials. If nothing changes, your intake was probably fine.

If anxiety is persistent, gets in the way of training or work, or comes with panic attacks, see a GP. Magnesium sits alongside a normal diet; it does not sit in place of treatment. And if you already take medication, the label on the worked example says to check with a pharmacist before adding magnesium.

When should you take magnesium for anxiety, and what should it not be mixed with?

With your evening meal, as a chelated glycinate at 300mg elemental, because that is the dose and the form the general trials used and the slot that also covers sleep quality. Alcohol raises urinary magnesium losses, so a heavy weekend undoes some of the week; caffeine has a smaller effect in the same direction. What it should not be mixed with is a proprietary stress blend where the magnesium is oxide, the amounts are unprinted and the herbal extras have their own cautions. A single-ingredient product with the elemental figure on the panel, third-party tested, is the version you can reason about. If you take any medication, check with a pharmacist before adding magnesium, which is exactly what the worked example's label says.

What to check on the label

  • No anxiety, stress or calm claims on the label; none are authorised.
  • Elemental magnesium of about 300mg per serving.
  • Cost per 300mg elemental, which is where taurate and threonate fall down.
  • Nothing else in the capsule you did not ask for, such as herbal blends with their own effects.
  • A medication warning on the label, which honest products carry.

The worked example: Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate

Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate is the worked example because it gives the full 300mg elemental dose used in the general trials, from 2 capsules of 1500mg bisglycinate (20%), tolerates nightly use, and costs 22p a day from a £19.99 bottle of 180. UK made, vegan, lab tested.

Questions people also ask

Does magnesium glycinate help with anxiety?

It may help subjective stress where magnesium intake was low, according to a 2017 review of small trials. It is not a treatment and cannot be marketed as one.

Is magnesium taurate the best magnesium for anxiety?

No trial shows it beating other forms. It carries about 9% magnesium, so you take more capsules for less magnesium at a higher price.

How long does magnesium take to work for anxiety?

The trials that found an effect ran six to eight weeks. Judge it after two months of a full 300mg daily dose.

Can I take magnesium with anxiety medication?

Ask a pharmacist first. The worked example's label says not to use it alongside other medications without checking.

Which magnesium is best for sleep and anxiety together?

Glycinate, taken in the evening with food, for the tolerance rather than any special effect.
