Which magnesium is best for sleep and anxiety UK?
Magnesium glycinate is the usual choice for people who train and want help with sleep and everyday stress: well tolerated at 300mg a day. Evidence for anxiety is suggestive but weak; it is not a treatment for an anxiety disorder.
- 300mgelemental magnesium per 2 capsules
- 18 studiesin Boyle's 2017 anxiety and stress review
- 22pa day, Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate
- Eveningwith your last meal
Worked example: Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate on Amazon UK, 300mg elemental per serving, 180 capsules for £19.99. If anxiety is persistent or affecting daily life, see a GP; supplements are not the route.
What magnesium can say, and what the research says about anxiety
The authorised claims are the honest frame here: magnesium contributes to normal psychological function and to the normal functioning of the nervous system. Nothing about anxiety is authorised, and any product claiming to treat it is out of line.
The research is worth knowing anyway. Boyle, Lawton and Dye reviewed 18 studies in 2017 and found the evidence for magnesium on subjective anxiety and stress suggestive, particularly in people vulnerable to low magnesium, but the trials were small and of low quality. Pickering's 2020 review describes the mechanism as a loop: stress increases magnesium losses in urine, low magnesium raises the stress response, and so on. For someone training hard, sweating a lot and sleeping badly, that loop is plausible and worth closing with a normal intake. That is a different thing from treating an anxiety disorder.
Sleep: the same story, a little more evidence
Trials in older adults with insomnia found modest improvements with 500mg of magnesium a day over eight weeks; Mah and Pitre's 2021 review put the effect on sleep onset at roughly 17 minutes from low quality evidence. No sleep claim is authorised in the UK. The practical reading for a lifter: if your intake is low, correcting it may help you settle; if your intake is already fine, more magnesium will not do much.
| Form | Elemental content | Human evidence specific to mood or sleep | Tolerance at 300mg | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Glycinate (bisglycinate) | about 14% to 20% | Same general trials as other oral forms | Best | The practical choice for nightly use |
| Taurate | about 9% | Very little; mostly proposed on mechanism | Good | Low elemental content, more capsules, more cost |
| L-threonate | about 8% | Animal data on brain magnesium; small human pilot work | Good | Expensive; no reason to prefer it on current evidence |
| Citrate | about 16% | Used in some trials | Laxative at night | Better in the morning |
| Oxide | about 60% | Used in Abbasi 2012 | Laxative, poorly absorbed | Cheap, mostly unabsorbed |
Dose, timing and how long to give it
Take 300mg of elemental magnesium in the evening with food. The worked example, Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate, gives exactly that from 2 capsules, 1500mg bisglycinate at 20%, and costs 22p a day from a 180 capsule bottle at £19.99. Stay under the 400mg a day supplement guidance level. Give it six to eight weeks, which is how long the trials ran, and judge sleep first, because that is where the evidence is strongest.
If anxiety is persistent, is interfering with training or work, or comes with panic, see a GP. A supplement that helps a marginal intake is not a substitute for treatment when treatment is what is needed.
The UK product that fits
For sleep and everyday training stress, the best magnesium supplement in the UK on dose, tolerance and price is Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate: 300mg elemental per serving, 80% NRV, vegan capsules, UK made under GMP and BRC, independently tested for heavy metals, 90 days for £19.99. It is the 300mg elemental one.
What to check on the label
- No treatment claims on the label. Anxiety, insomnia and stress are not authorised claims; a product that makes them is telling you something about the company.
- Elemental magnesium of about 300mg per serving, printed as its own line.
- Glycinate named first, not taurate or threonate priced at three times the cost for a third of the magnesium.
- No hidden stimulants or sedatives in blends; read the whole ingredients line.
- Batch testing for heavy metals, shown on the listing.

Questions people also ask
Which magnesium is best for sleep and anxiety?
Glycinate, because it is the form you can take at 300mg every evening without a laxative effect. No form has strong evidence for anxiety; the effect, where seen, comes from correcting a low intake.
Does magnesium glycinate help with anxiety?
It may help subjective stress in people with low magnesium intake, according to a 2017 review of small trials. It is not a treatment for anxiety disorders and cannot be marketed as one in the UK.
How much magnesium should I take for sleep and anxiety?
300mg elemental a day from a supplement, with food, in the evening. The UK guidance level for supplemental magnesium is 400mg a day.
Is magnesium taurate better than glycinate for anxiety?
There is no human trial showing that. Taurate carries about 9% magnesium against 14% to 20% for glycinate, so you take more capsules for less magnesium.
Can I take magnesium with anxiety medication?
Ask your pharmacist. The label on most magnesium products, including the worked example, says not to use it if you are taking other medications without checking first.
