Best 5 Spin Bikes for Under £500

BTM Indoor Cycling Exercise Bike

As the second most affordable bike on our list, the BTM Indoor Cycling Exercise Bike should still be an appealing option for those of you on a budget. However, it packs plenty of bang for your buck. From the get-go, it looks like a much higher-end bike than it actually is. It wouldn’t be out of place sitting in an upmarket spin cycle studio.

It has a max adjustable resistance of 10 kg, the seat and handlebar height is adjustable, you control the resistance and stop the bike with a knob on the top tube and the display gives you full power over all its capabilities. On the downside, it only supports a max weight of 120 kg. One thing it has that most other bikes don’t is the ability to adjust the earth level at each foot. The build quality, smoothness and noise are amazing for a bike in this price range.

It comes with a water bottle holder, which shouldn’t be taken for granted. We believe that this is the best value for money bike on this list. It’s by no means a high-end spin bike, but it’s definitely superior to almost all the others in this price range.

ProsCons
  • Fantastic value for money
  • Waterbottle holder
  • Earth level adjustments
  • Produces a little bit of noise

Pro-Fit Indoor Cycling Home Exercise Bike

This is one of our low to mid-range exercise bikes. It’s not only attractive to look at, but it also has an attractive price. True to its price tag, it is a pretty straightforward spin bike without much in the way of advanced features, yet it still comes with everything you need in a home exercise bike.

It’s a fixed, 2-way belt-driven flywheel bike with a maximum resistance of up to 13 kg. This isn’t the most we’ve seen, but it should be enough for most cyclers to get a decent workout. You adjust the bike’s resistance manually with a nob that sticks out above the front wheel. Almost every part of the bike is adjustable. As you can expect, the display is fairly simple, but it has the essentials like time, speed, distance, pulse and calories burned.

The pedals have a lip in front so that your foot will sit securely without having to tie the straps too tight. For a more affordable bike, the ride is pretty smooth and quiet. However, it’s not as durable as some of the others, and some parts may become loose over time. As a nice little bonus, you get a free water bottle plus a 5-day workout program DVD that includes core and abdominal routines.

ProsCons
  • Comes with a 5-day workout DVD and free water bottle
  • Quiet and smooth ride
  • Parts don’t fit 100% securely

JLL IC300 PRO Indoor Cycling Exercise Bike

The JLL IC300 is the most expensive bike on this list and barely slips under our £500 budget. However, it’s just too good a bike not to include. It is one of the most highly recommended by customers on Amazon. If you are a bit more serious about your biking or if you have the cash to spare, this is a great option.

It’s the first magnetic resistance bike on this list. Magnetised resistance is unparalleled when it comes to smoothness and noise dampening. It has a maximum resistance of 20 kg, which should be enough for anyone from rookies to serious athletes. The fact that it’s belt driven also contributes to its smoothness and quietness. There are pulse plates on the handlebars for increased accuracy. The display is also a noticeable step up from our other picks. On top of the standard statistics, the display also shows RPM and saves your previous stats.

Overall, the build quality and the quality of the ride on this bike are just tremendous. From the seat to the handles to the smoothness of the ride, everything is pro-gym quality. These luxuries don’t come cheap, but it’s a price we’d happily pay. The only complaint we could come up with is that the water bottle holder is a little far to reach.

ProsCons
  • Superior build quality
  • Extremely smooth and quiet ride thanks to magnetised resistance
  • Some complaints about problems with the magnetised resistance

Esprit MOTIV-8 Exercise Spin Bike

The MOTIV-8 is the cheapest bike on our list, but don’t let that fool you. It’s still a fantastic spin bike that will your take workout where it needs to go. Its most obvious shortcoming is that you can only set it up to a maximum 10 kg resistance. However, if you’re a beginner, this will be more than enough for you to grapple with and will even provide a challenge for more seasoned spinners.

You adjust the weight from a standard knob on the top tube that also acts as an emergency stop mechanism. The seat and handlebars are adjustable. A bonus is that this bike can support a user that weighs up to 150 kg, which is more than even some higher-end bikes. The display is pretty standard and shows calories, speed, distance and time, and it has a scan function.

Pro tip: One thing that took us (and some other users) a while to figure out is that you can reset the display by holding down the red button.

Don’t expect the same build quality as most of the other bikes on this list. After all, you are buying it for a bargain. However, it shouldn’t lead to any major problems.

ProsCons
  • Can support up to 150 kg
  • Good value for money spin bike
  • Don’t expect the same quality as some of the other bikes

XS Sports Aerobic Indoor Training Exercise

With the XS Sports, we officially get into the mid to high-end of exercise bikes. Don’t worry; it’s still well under £500, but it’s almost double the price of the other three affordable bikes, which immediately raises our expectations. First of all, this is a brand new model released in 2018, so you don’t need to worry about it being technologically behind in any way.

Second of all, you can adjust the resistance on the flywheel to a maximum 15 kg, which is quite high. It comes with built-in pulse sensors on the handlebars as well as elbow rests, which come in very handy during a long session as leaning on standard handles can get quite uncomfortable. The display is still very standard with only a “Total Distance” optional extra.

As expected, it comes with a water bottle holder as well as a free aluminium water bottle to put in it. The two biggest complaints we have with this bike is that one, the 2-way chain system is quite noisy, and two, it also looks like a much lower-end bike purely from an aesthetic perspective. However, the build quality and stability are a step up from the more affordable products.

ProsCons
  • Up to 15 kg maximum resistance
  • Water bottle holder and free aluminium water bottle
  • Quite noisy for the price range

Conclusion

Which one of the best spin bikes strikes your fancy? For us, the BTM was just too good to beat, especially since this list was about finding an affordable spin bike. Honestly, we would have probably paid a few hundred quid more for this bake and not have felt totally cheated. The great looks and water bottle holder are just the cherries on top.

In most ways, the PRO-FIT was comparable and very similar to the BTM. However, it did cost a bit more and didn’t come with any nice extras.

Then, we have the JLL IC3000. It was one of the most highly recommended spin bikes we came across. It is a very expensive bike compared to the others, but the quality is also unsurpassed and more than worth the cost if you can afford it.

The Esprit Motiv-8 is the cheapest bike by just a few quid. However, we felt that for 20 or so pounds more, you might as well get the BTM. That being said, it’s still a solid beginner bike.

Lastly, we have the XS Sports. It’s a great bike, but we just felt that compared to the others, it didn’t offer the same value for money.

Buyer’s Guide to Spin Bikes

What are the benefits of spinning?

Spinning is a relatively low-cost form of exercise. For just a few hundred quid, you can get a great spinning bike for your home that you can hop on at any time. You don’t need any other fancy equipment or shoes to get the most out of it. It’s also convenient since you can listen to music or watch tv or even talk on the phone while you are burning those calories away.

The biggest benefit is that spinning is an effective form of low-impact cardio. It’s very easy on the joints, and your risk of injury is dramatically reduced if you compare it to running. This makes it a great form of exercise for serious athletes as well as for those recovering from injury or the elderly whose joints can’t deal with more strenuous forms of cardio.

What you should look for in a spin bike

Display and Stats

Most modern bikes come with a basic electronic display. This display shows an estimation of your distance, speed and calories burned, and it may even include sensors to read your pulse. Higher-end bikes also include RPM, which is mostly used by more serious riders to gauge their performance. Higher-end bikes may even be able to save workout records and contain pre-programmed workouts.

Resistance

Setting the resistance up or down makes it easier or harder to pedal the bike. You can think of this almost as cycling up an incline or changing gears on a real bike. Most people use some level of resistance to make it feel closer to the strain of the real thing. Higher-end bikes usually have higher maximum resistance settings.

Adjustment

At the very least, you should be able to adjust the height of the handlebars as well as the height of the seat. Most bikes also allow you to adjust the seat backwards or forwards slightly. Even then, some bikes are just too small or too big for some users. To get the most from your workout, you should find a bike that suits your dimensions.

Pedals

The pedals aren’t too big of a deal. The only requirement we would place on them in this day and age is that they have a cage for your toes at the front to stop your feet from slipping forward and so that you don’t have to fix the straps as tightly.

Smoothness and Noise

In general, belt-driven bikes are much quieter and smoother than their chain-driven counterparts. This is for your convenience, as the noise can get quite annoying, disturb others in your house or drown out your favourite sitcom.
