Why can't you take zinc and magnesium together?

By George Thomas. Published 15 September 2026, updated 15 September 2026. Label figures and prices checked on the update date.

You can take zinc and magnesium together; the warning is a myth from high-dose competition studies. At 10 to 15mg zinc and 300mg magnesium in a meal, absorption is fine, every day. Trouble comes from empty stomachs and 30mg zinc.

  • A myththe can't-take-together warning, at supplement doses
  • 10mg to 15mgzinc, and 300mg magnesium: the doses that coexist fine
  • Every dayhow often the pairing is fine, with food
  • 25mgthe zinc guidance level the real caution is about

Where the warning came from

The idea has a real ancestor and a false descendant. The ancestor: divalent minerals, zinc, magnesium, calcium, iron, share some absorption machinery in the gut, and studies giving large doses of one mineral have shown reduced uptake of another taken at the same moment, most clearly calcium blunting iron and high-dose zinc interfering with copper. The false descendant: that any two minerals in the same meal cancel each other, which is how a nuanced high-dose finding became a bathroom-cabinet rule. At the doses this site recommends, 10mg to 15mg of zinc and 300mg of elemental magnesium inside a mixed meal that already contains all these minerals from food, the competition effect is negligible, and the everyday version of the question, can you take zinc and magnesium together every day, has a plain yes.

The benefits, stated at authorised size, and the pairing's real logic

Neither mineral needs the other, which is worth saying because the ZMA-era framing implies synergy. Magnesium's authorised contributions, normal muscle function, protein synthesis, energy metabolism, reduced tiredness, nervous system and psychological function, run on adequate intake. Zinc's, normal immune function, protein synthesis, the maintenance of normal testosterone in blood, cognitive function, run on adequacy too, with Prasad's decades of deficiency work behind the immune line. The pairing's real logic is diet-shaped: the narrow physique diet that runs magnesium low, lots of rice and shakes, few greens and nuts, is often also light on the meat, dairy, eggs and seafood that carry zinc. Two adequacy problems, one dinner, no synergy story required.

The zinc and magnesium together questions, settled
QuestionAnswerWhy
Can you take zinc and magnesium together?YesNegligible competition at supplement doses inside a meal
Every day?Yes, at 10mg to 15mg zinc and 300mg magnesiumBoth under their guidance levels: 25mg and 400mg
Magnesium glycinate and zinc at the same time?Yes, with dinnerGlycinate's food preference and zinc's food rule coincide
Where did the warning come from?High-dose competition studies, over-generalisedReal at therapeutic doses, irrelevant at these
The two real cautionsZinc on an empty stomach; zinc above 25mg long termNausea, and copper depletion, respectively
Benefits of taking them together? Each mineral's own claims, at adequacyNo synergy; two problems solved at one meal

The two cautions worth keeping, and the routine

Discard the myth and keep the two facts hiding behind it. First, zinc on an empty stomach nauseates a fair share of people, which is why the ZMA bedtime ritual generates queasy reviews and why zinc belongs inside a meal. Second, zinc above the 25mg a day guidance level taken long term interferes with copper absorption, the mechanism behind the level itself, and ZMA's 30mg nightly sits over it by design. The honest pairing: Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate, 2 capsules with the evening meal for 300mg elemental at 80% NRV, vegan, UK made under GMP and BRC, panels shown, £19.99 for 180 at 22p a day, plus a plain 10mg to 15mg zinc with the same dinner on the days the plate ran short. Why can't you take zinc and magnesium together: you can, and the people telling you otherwise were half-remembering a study about different doses.

What to check on the label

  • You can, every day: the competition effect is negligible at supplement doses in a meal.
  • The myth's ancestor is real: high-dose mineral competition, over-generalised.
  • No synergy needed: two adequacy problems solved at one dinner.
  • Zinc with food, always: empty-stomach nausea is the first real caution.
  • Zinc under 25mg a day: copper depletion is the second; ZMA's 30mg breaks it.

The worked example: Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate

Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate is the magnesium half of the everyday pairing: 300mg elemental per 2 capsules (80% NRV) from bisglycinate 20%, with dinner, beside 10mg to 15mg zinc if the diet is short, 22p a day from a £19.99 bottle of 180. Vegan, UK made, panels shown.

Questions people also ask

Do zinc and magnesium cancel each other out?

No. At supplement doses inside a meal the competition is negligible; the cancelling idea comes from high-dose studies of other mineral pairs.

Can I take zinc and magnesium together every day?

Yes, at 10mg to 15mg zinc and 300mg magnesium with food, both under their UK guidance levels.

What are the benefits of zinc and magnesium together?

Each mineral's own authorised claims at adequacy: magnesium for muscle, energy and nerves; zinc for immunity, protein synthesis and normal testosterone. No synergy claim exists.

Can I take magnesium glycinate and zinc at the same time?

Yes, with dinner: the glycinate's with-food preference and zinc's with-food rule point at the same meal.

Why does ZMA say to take it on an empty stomach then?

To keep its 30mg zinc away from calcium, which matters at that high dose. At 10mg to 15mg inside a meal, the rule is unnecessary and the nausea it causes is avoidable.
