When is the best time of day to take magnesium and zinc?

By George Thomas. Published 15 September 2026, updated 15 September 2026. Label figures and prices checked on the update date.

The best time of day for magnesium and zinc is dinner: magnesium needs food and the evening covers the night, zinc needs food and does not care about the clock. Zinc at breakfast and magnesium at dinner works identically.

  • Dinnerthe slot that satisfies both minerals' one requirement, food
  • Breakfastan equal slot for zinc, a fine one for magnesium
  • Never fastedzinc's only real timing rule
  • 22pa day for the magnesium half whenever it is taken

The magnesium half: Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate on Amazon UK, 180 capsules for £19.99. Label breakdown. Which mineral belongs at night is on the zinc or magnesium at night page; the before-bed doses on how much zinc and magnesium before bed.

Scoring the three meals for each mineral

Magnesium as glycinate wants food, for comfort, and has one preference beyond that, the evening, which covers the night the small sleep trials studied and attaches to the meal least skipped; morning and midday lose the bonus and nothing else, because magnesium has no acute effect and is neither a stimulant nor a sedative. Zinc wants food, for the avoidance of nausea, and has no preference whatsoever beyond it: its claims, immune function, protein synthesis, the maintenance of normal testosterone, run on weeks of adequacy, indifferent to the hour, as Prasad's deficiency work implies. Score the meals and dinner satisfies both minerals' one requirement while collecting magnesium's bonus; breakfast satisfies both requirements and drops the bonus; lunch is breakfast with worse habit odds.

The day planned, three ways

Plan A, the simplest: both with dinner, 300mg elemental magnesium and 10mg to 15mg zinc, one habit, no meaningful interaction at those doses in a mixed meal. Plan B, the separated version some prefer: zinc with breakfast, magnesium with dinner, which buys peace of mind about mineral competition that is negligible anyway and costs a second habit to maintain. Plan C, the shift-worker version: both with the main meal before the longest sleep, whatever the clock reads, because the night-coverage logic follows the sleep. What every plan forbids is the ZMA inheritance, zinc alone on an empty stomach at bedtime, which produces nausea and no benefit, and the stacking of any plan onto a 30mg zinc product that already exceeds the guidance level.

The routine, and the doses inside it

Plan A written out: Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate, 2 capsules with the evening meal, 300mg elemental at 80% NRV from bisglycinate at 20%, under the 400mg supplement guidance level, vegan, UK made under GMP and BRC, panels shown, £19.99 for 180 capsules, 22p a day; plus a plain single-ingredient zinc at 10mg to 15mg with the same dinner on the days meat, dairy, eggs and seafood were scarce, under the 25mg guidance level. Both daily, both judged over weeks, neither timed around training because neither does anything acute. When is the best time of day to take magnesium and zinc: dinner, unless breakfast is the meal you never miss, in which case breakfast for the zinc and dinner for the magnesium, or breakfast for both, and the clock retires from the decision.

What to check on the label

  • Dinner is the default for both: food satisfied, night bonus collected.
  • Breakfast is an equal zinc slot and a fine magnesium one: Plan B.
  • Shift workers follow the sleep: main meal before the longest sleep.
  • Never zinc on an empty stomach at bedtime: the ZMA ritual to retire.
  • No pre-workout logic exists: neither mineral acts acutely.

The worked example: Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate

Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate takes the dinner slot: 300mg elemental per 2 capsules (80% NRV) from bisglycinate 20%, beside 10mg to 15mg zinc when the diet is short, 22p a day from a £19.99 bottle of 180. Vegan, UK made, panels shown.

Questions people also ask

Should I take zinc in the morning and magnesium at night?

That works identically to both at dinner. Separation buys peace of mind about negligible competition and costs a second habit.

Is it better to take magnesium and zinc before or after a workout?

Neither: no acute effect exists for either mineral. Take them with a meal you never skip and let the weeks do the work.

Can I take zinc and magnesium at the same time in the morning?

Yes, with a proper breakfast. Magnesium loses only its night-coverage bonus; zinc loses nothing.

What is the best time to take zinc and magnesium for sleep?

Magnesium with dinner, for the night coverage and habit; zinc has no sleep role at any hour and simply goes with food.

Why do supplements say to take zinc at night?

ZMA-era marketing: its 30mg dose needed separating from calcium. At 10mg to 15mg inside a meal, the rule is unnecessary.
