What medications should you not take with magnesium?

Magnesium can affect some medicines, so space it from tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics, bisphosphonates, levothyroxine and gabapentin, by two to four hours, and ask a pharmacist about diuretics and long-term acid suppressants. Kidney disease means no magnesium without your clinician.

  • 2 to 4 hoursthe usual spacing from medicines magnesium can bind
  • 3 listsspacing, loss, and ask-first
  • Kidneysthe circumstance that overrides every list
  • 1 minutewhat a pharmacist needs to settle your specific case

The single-ingredient product this list is written for: Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate on Amazon UK, 180 capsules for £19.99. Label breakdown. The wider safety framing is on the safest type page.

List one: medicines to space from magnesium

Magnesium is a positively charged mineral and binds to certain drugs in the gut, reducing their absorption when swallowed together; the fix is spacing, not avoidance, and it applies to glycinate exactly as to any other form. Tetracycline antibiotics, doxycycline among them, and quinolone antibiotics, ciprofloxacin among them, are the classic cases: take the antibiotic well apart from the magnesium, typically two hours before or four to six hours after, following the pharmacy's instruction. Bisphosphonates for bone density, alendronate among them, have their own strict morning rules and want magnesium hours away. Levothyroxine for thyroid replacement is usually taken alone on waking with magnesium four hours later, and gabapentin's leaflet asks for a two-hour gap. None of these is a reason to stop a magnesium a narrow diet needs; all of them are a reason to put the capsules at dinner and the medicine elsewhere.

List two: medicines that change your magnesium, and list three: ask first

A second group does not clash with the capsule but moves the mineral itself, which changes whether you need it. Loop and thiazide diuretics raise urinary magnesium loss and can create a deficiency worth supplementing, while potassium-sparing diuretics reduce loss and make supplements less necessary; either way the prescriber should know. Long-term proton pump inhibitors, omeprazole and its relatives, are the subject of a UK regulator safety warning for causing low magnesium over months to years, a reason to raise the topic rather than to self-treat. The third list is circumstances, not drugs: chronic kidney disease at any stage, where magnesium clearance fails and supplements can genuinely harm, means nothing without your clinician; and any medicine not named here still deserves the one-minute pharmacist question, because the magnesium interaction list is longer than any webpage and your regimen is specific.

The practical shape of it, and the label that already says so

Almost every interaction on this page resolves into a schedule rather than a prohibition, and a glycinate at dinner is the easiest thing in a regimen to schedule around: morning medicines get the morning, the capsules get the evening meal, the pharmacist confirms the gaps. The worked example's label carries the instruction this page expands, do not use with other medications without consulting a healthcare professional first, alongside its usual declarations: Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate, 300mg elemental at 80% NRV per 2 capsules, single ingredient so the pharmacist question is one mineral long, vegan, UK made under GMP and BRC, panels shown, £19.99 for 180, 22p a day. What medications should you not take with magnesium: not so much a list of never as a list of when, plus one circumstance, the kidneys, where the answer is genuinely not without a clinician.

What to check on the label

  • Space, do not stop: antibiotics, bisphosphonates, levothyroxine, gabapentin, by 2 to 4 hours or more.
  • Diuretics change your need: loop and thiazide raise losses, potassium-sparing reduce them.
  • Long-term PPIs can lower magnesium: a prescriber conversation, not self-treatment.
  • Kidney disease: no supplements without your clinician.
  • The one-minute pharmacist question covers everything not named here.

Questions people also ask

Can I take magnesium glycinate with antibiotics?

Usually yes, spaced: tetracyclines and quinolones bind magnesium in the gut, so take the antibiotic two hours before or four to six hours after, as the pharmacy advises.

Can I take magnesium with levothyroxine?

Spaced by at least four hours: thyroid tablet on waking, magnesium with the evening meal, is the common arrangement. Confirm with your pharmacist.

Does omeprazole affect magnesium?

Long-term proton pump inhibitor use can lower magnesium, the subject of a UK regulator warning. Raise it with the prescriber rather than self-treating.

Can I take magnesium with blood pressure medication?

Often, but it depends on the drug: diuretics change magnesium loss in either direction, and some other agents interact. Ask the pharmacist about your specific tablets.

Who should not take magnesium supplements at all?

Anyone with chronic kidney disease without their clinician's sign-off, and anyone told so by a professional for a specific interaction.
