Which five medications should not be mixed with magnesium?

Five medications should not be mixed with magnesium at the same hour: tetracycline antibiotics, quinolone antibiotics, bisphosphonates, levothyroxine and gabapentin. Magnesium binds them in the gut, doses are spaced by two to six hours. A pharmacist sets the exact gaps.

  • 5medication groups that need spacing from magnesium
  • 2 to 6 hoursthe gaps involved, set per medicine
  • 1 mechanismbehind all five: magnesium binding the drug in the gut
  • +2the diuretics and acid suppressants worth knowing beyond the list

The single-ingredient product that keeps the pharmacist conversation short: Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate on Amazon UK, 180 capsules for £19.99. Label breakdown. The fuller three-list version is on the medications and magnesium page.

One mechanism, five medicines

All five entries on this list fail for the same chemical reason: magnesium is a positively charged mineral that binds certain drug molecules in the gut, forming complexes too large or too insoluble to absorb, so a dose swallowed alongside magnesium partly never arrives. Number one, tetracycline antibiotics, doxycycline the common UK example: the classic chelation case, with the antibiotic taken two hours before or four to six hours after any magnesium. Number two, quinolone antibiotics, ciprofloxacin chief among them: the same binding, the same spacing, and pharmacies flag it on the label because underdosed antibiotics are a genuine treatment failure. Number three, bisphosphonates for bone density, alendronate and relatives: already the fussiest tablets in Britain, taken fasted on waking with plain water, and magnesium belongs hours away on the other side of the day.

The final two, and why none of the five means stopping

Number four, levothyroxine: thyroid replacement is dosed to the microgram and absorbed fussily, so the standard arrangement is the thyroid tablet alone on waking and magnesium with the evening meal, at least four hours clear, an arrangement that also suits the glycinate habit perfectly. Number five, gabapentin: its own leaflet asks for a two-hour gap after magnesium-containing products, antacids included, because absorption drops when they share the stomach. Notice what none of the five is: a reason to abandon a magnesium a narrow diet needs. Every entry resolves into a schedule, morning medicine, evening capsules or the reverse, and the pharmacist writes that schedule in a minute, which is why the single-ingredient product matters, one mineral to schedule instead of a blend's four.

The rule that outlives the list, and the kidney exception

Lists of five are memorable and never complete, so keep the rule that generates them: any medicine absorbed in the gut can in principle be blunted by a mineral sharing the stomach, and the one-minute pharmacist question, I take magnesium at dinner, does anything on my list mind, covers drugs no webpage names. The exception that outranks all spacing is chronic kidney disease, where magnesium clearance fails and supplements can genuinely harm: that is a clinician conversation before the first capsule, not a scheduling matter. The product this page assumes is the simple one: Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate, 2 capsules with the evening meal, 300mg elemental at 80% NRV, single ingredient, its label carrying the consult-first line, vegan, UK made under GMP and BRC, panels shown, £19.99 for 180 at 22p a day. Which five medications should not be mixed with magnesium: the two antibiotic families, bisphosphonates, levothyroxine and gabapentin, all solvable with a clock and a pharmacist.

What to check on the label

  • The five: tetracyclines, quinolones, bisphosphonates, levothyroxine, gabapentin.
  • One mechanism: gut binding; one fix: 2 to 6 hour gaps, pharmacist-set.
  • Diuretics and long-term PPIs are the footnotes: they change your magnesium instead.
  • Spacing, not stopping: morning medicines, evening capsules, or the reverse.
  • Kidney disease outranks the list: clinician before any supplement.

Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate keeps the schedule simple: one mineral, 300mg elemental per 2 capsules at dinner, easily spaced from any morning medicine, 22p a day from a £19.99 bottle of 180. Vegan, UK made, panels shown.

Questions people also ask

Why do antibiotics need spacing from magnesium?

Tetracyclines and quinolones bind to magnesium in the gut, and the bound antibiotic is not absorbed, risking treatment failure. The 2-to-6-hour gaps prevent it.

Can I take magnesium if I am on levothyroxine?

Yes, spaced: thyroid tablet alone on waking, magnesium with the evening meal at least four hours later, confirmed with your pharmacist.

Does magnesium interact with blood pressure tablets?

Diuretics interact indirectly, by changing how much magnesium you lose, in either direction. Tell the prescriber; no stomach-sharing gap is needed.

Is it dangerous to take magnesium with these five medicines?

The danger is underdosed medicine, not toxicity: the drug is what loses. Spacing restores full doses of both.

Who decides my exact magnesium timing around medicines?

A pharmacist, in about a minute, from your actual medicine list: gaps vary by drug and formulation, and the list above is the map, not the prescription.
