Futuro Labs Marine Collagen: label, dose and cost per day

What one serving gives you, worked through

The front of the bottle says 600mg and 120 capsules; the panel says a serving is 2 capsules giving 1200mg of marine collagen, type 1, hydrolysed. Alongside it, vitamin C at 12mg and zinc at 1.5mg as zinc citrate, each 15% of the nutrient reference value (80mg for vitamin C, 10mg for zinc). The ingredients line is short: marine collagen type 1 hydrolysed (fish), vitamin C, natural rice extract as a flow agent, zinc citrate. Hydrolysed means the collagen has been broken into peptides small enough to absorb; type 1 is the collagen of skin, tendon, ligament and bone.

The vitamin C and zinc are not decoration. Collagen itself has no authorised health claims in the UK; vitamin C and zinc do, and 15% of the NRV is the threshold at which a product can carry them. So the honest statements about this product are these: vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, cartilage, bones, blood vessels, gums and teeth; zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal skin, hair and nails, to normal protein synthesis and to the maintenance of normal bones.

The label, line by line

Dose honesty: 1200mg against the research

Most of the tendon and joint research on collagen used 10g to 15g of gelatin or hydrolysed collagen, often with vitamin C, taken about an hour before training; Shaw and colleagues' 2017 study is the one usually quoted. A 2-capsule serving gives 1200mg, roughly a tenth of that. This site says so on every collagen page. What the capsule format buys you is convenience, a slim size 00 capsule with no fishy taste, plus the vitamin C and zinc co-factors at a claim-carrying level. If you want research-level collagen doses, that is a powder decision, and the collagen section says so rather than pretending otherwise.

Cost per day, worked out

£16.99 for 120 capsules at 2 a day is 60 servings; £16.99 divided by 60 is 28.3p, so 28p a day. Sold by Futuro Labs on Amazon UK and delivered by Amazon. The label directions are 2 capsules a day, preferably with a meal; the label also says not to use it if pregnant, nursing or taking other medications without checking first, and to keep it out of reach of children.

Testing, where it is made, and who it suits

The listing publishes the independent test panel: microbiology (total viable count, yeast and mould, E. coli, salmonella, staphylococcus) all passed, and heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, total) all passed, against a 1200mg specification. Made in the UK under GMP; the label carries Futuro Lab Supplements Ltd, 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9JQ. It is a fish product, so it suits pescatarians and is not vegetarian or vegan, whatever any listing text says; this site goes by the ingredients line.

It is the reference row in comparisons because the collagen type, the hydrolysis, the fish source and the co-factor amounts are all printed, which most collagen labels do not manage.
