When to take ZMA?

By George Thomas. Published 16 September 2026, updated 16 September 2026. Label figures and prices checked on the update date.

If you keep ZMA, follow its label: empty stomach, 30 to 60 minutes before bed. That ritual exists because the 30mg zinc dose competes with food minerals. The dinner-friendly alternative, 300mg glycinate plus 10 to 15mg zinc, needs no ritual.

  • 30 to 60 minutesbefore bed, empty stomach: the label's instruction
  • 30mgthe zinc dose the ritual is protecting
  • 0 ritualsneeded by the honest two-product alternative
  • Nullwhat the formula's independent trial found, ritual observed

The ritual-free alternative's magnesium half: Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate on Amazon UK, 180 capsules for £19.99. Label breakdown. Whether ZMA is worth keeping at all is on the is ZMA worth it page; the head-to-head on ZMA vs glycinate.

The label's instruction, and the reasoning inside it

ZMA's directions are unusually ceremonial for a mineral product: take on an empty stomach, 30 to 60 minutes before bed, and specifically away from calcium and dairy. Decoded, each clause protects the same design choice. The formula carries 30mg of zinc, and zinc at that dose visibly competes with calcium and other divalent minerals for absorption, so the label quarantines it from food; the bedtime slot exists because the original marketing tied the formula to sleep and overnight recovery; and the empty stomach requirement is the price of the quarantine, paid in the nausea that a fair share of users report from unfed zinc. Follow the ritual if you own the product, because at 30mg the food-competition concern is the one part of the label that is chemically real.

What the ritual is telling you about the formula

A supplement that cannot survive contact with dinner is announcing its own overdose. At 10mg to 15mg, zinc sits happily inside a mixed meal, competition negligible, nausea rare, copper status untouched; the ritual only becomes necessary at 30mg, which is also the point where the dose exceeds the UK's 25mg guidance level, set to protect copper absorption on long-term use. And the ceremony buys nothing measurable: Wilborn's independent trial ran the full label protocol, ritual and all, in trained men for eight weeks and found no change in hormones, strength or body composition. The timing question, best time to take ZMA, therefore has a true answer and a useful one: truly, 30 to 60 minutes before bed on an empty stomach as directed; usefully, at the point of repurchase, never again.

The alternative routine, and the migration

The two-product version abolishes the ceremony because its doses never needed one: Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate, 2 capsules with the evening meal, 300mg elemental at 80% NRV from bisglycinate at 20%, vegan, UK made under GMP and BRC, panels shown, £19.99 for 180 capsules, 22p a night; plus a plain 10mg to 15mg zinc with the same dinner on the days meat, dairy, eggs and seafood were scarce. No empty stomach, no dairy quarantine, no bedtime countdown, and the B6 goes unreplaced because UK diets rarely lack it. Migrating is one decision at the end of the current tub: finish the ZMA by its own rules, then let the ritual retire with the formula. When to take ZMA: exactly as the label says, for as long as you still own some.

What to check on the label

  • As directed: empty stomach, 30 to 60 minutes before bed, away from dairy.
  • The ritual protects a 30mg zinc dose that competes with food minerals.
  • The ceremony bought nothing in the independent trial: null at full protocol.
  • 10mg to 15mg zinc needs no quarantine: dinner absorbs it comfortably.
  • The migration: finish the tub, switch to glycinate plus separate zinc.

The worked example: Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate

Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate anchors the ritual-free version: 300mg elemental per 2 capsules (80% NRV) from bisglycinate 20%, with dinner, beside an optional 10mg to 15mg zinc, about 25p a night combined. Vegan, UK made, panels shown.

Questions people also ask

What is the best time to take ZMA?

As its label says: on an empty stomach, 30 to 60 minutes before bed, away from calcium. The rules are real consequences of the 30mg zinc dose.

Why does ZMA have to be taken on an empty stomach?

Because 30mg of zinc competes with calcium and other minerals in food. At honest zinc doses the quarantine is unnecessary.

Can I take ZMA with food anyway?

You can, and absorption of its zinc will suffer somewhat, which given the null trial changes little. The nausea case for food is real, though.

Does taking ZMA at the right time make it work better?

The independent trial followed the full protocol, timing included, and found no benefit to hormones, strength or composition.

What should I take instead of ZMA at night?

300mg elemental magnesium as glycinate with dinner, plus 10mg to 15mg zinc with the same meal when your diet runs short: no ritual, honest doses, about 25p.
