What magnesium stops twitching?

No magnesium stops twitching on the spot. If low intake is the cause, glycinate at 300mg elemental daily settles it within weeks. Run it as a test: halve caffeine, protect sleep, a month with the evening meal, then judge.

Why nothing stops a twitch in the moment

A fasciculation is a motor unit firing on its own, and by the time you notice it the electrical event is over. No oral dose changes nerve membrane behaviour in minutes; magnesium works by restoring the mineral environment those membranes sit in, which is a matter of tissue stores refilling over days and weeks. Gröber's 2015 review lists neuromuscular hyperexcitability among the early signs of low magnesium, and Blexrud's long-term follow-up is the reassurance on the other side: benign fasciculations stayed benign over decades. So the honest promise is settles within weeks if intake was the cause, and the honest method is a controlled month.

The month-long test, step by step

Week zero: write down where the twitching happens, how often, and your caffeine intake including pre-workout, which is often 200mg or more a scoop. Then run four weeks with three changes at once. Caffeine halved, because it is the most common trigger and no supplement outruns it. Sleep protected at seven hours or more, because sleep debt is the second trigger. And 2 capsules of Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate with the evening meal: 1500mg chelated bisglycinate at 20%, 300mg elemental, 80% NRV, from a vegan capsule made in the UK under GMP and BRC certification and third-party tested for heavy metals and microbiology, 180 capsules for £19.99, 22p a day. At week four, read the notes. Settled means intake, caffeine or sleep was the cause and the routine stays. Unchanged means magnesium was not the problem; stop the capsules and look elsewhere rather than raising the dose past the 400mg guidance level.

Why glycinate is the form for the test

The test only works if the full dose is taken every day for a month, and glycinate is the form that makes that easy: 300mg elemental with no laxative effect, taken with food, evening slot so it doubles on sleep. Citrate at that dose loosens the bowel for many people and gets dropped by week two; oxide is about 4% absorbed, so a month of it tests nothing. There is no twitching claim on any honest label, because none is authorised; the wording that applies is normal muscle function, the normal functioning of the nervous system and electrolyte balance, which is exactly the ground a corrected intake covers.

What to check on the label

  • A baseline note of twitch sites, frequency and caffeine before you start.
  • Caffeine halved and sleep protected for the whole month; the capsules cannot outrun them.
  • Elemental magnesium 300mg per serving as bisglycinate, evening meal, every day.
  • No dose escalation past the 400mg a day guidance level if nothing changes.
  • A GP for twitching with weakness, wasting, numbness or persistence.

Questions people also ask

What magnesium gets rid of twitching fast?

None. If low intake is the cause, expect improvement over two to four weeks of 300mg elemental daily, not hours.

How much magnesium should I take to stop twitching?

300mg elemental a day as glycinate, with the evening meal, under the 400mg UK guidance level. More is not faster.

My eye twitch will not stop; will magnesium fix it?

Eyelid twitching is usually caffeine, screens and sleep loss. Halve the caffeine first; run the month test alongside if your diet is narrow.

How do I know if twitching is from low magnesium?

You cannot know from a blood test; serum stays normal until stores are very low. A narrow diet, heavy sweating and the month test are the practical evidence.

When is twitching serious?

With weakness, muscle wasting, numbness, or swallowing or speech problems, or when it spreads and persists for weeks. Those need a GP, not a supplement.
