Which magnesium is best for cortisol belly?

No magnesium reduces cortisol belly: abdominal fat comes from a calorie surplus, and trials show magnesium has no effect on body fat. Glycinate, 300mg elemental with the evening meal, supports sleep and energy metabolism while a deficit does the work.

What cortisol belly is, and is not

The phrase describes fat around the middle in someone who is stressed, sleeping badly and often eating more than they think. There is a real mechanism underneath it: chronically raised cortisol favours fat storage in the trunk, and sleep loss raises appetite and cortisol together. But the fat itself arrives the only way fat arrives, from a calorie surplus, and it leaves the only way fat leaves. Askari's 2021 meta-analysis of randomised trials found no meaningful effect of magnesium supplementation on body weight or waist circumference. No weight loss, fat loss or cortisol claim is authorised for magnesium, and a product marketed for cortisol belly is selling a phrase.

What magnesium does in that picture

Two things, both indirect. Pickering's 2020 review sets out the loop between stress and magnesium loss, and the small sleep trials, Abbasi's 2012 study and Mah and Pitre's 2021 review, found modest improvements in sleep onset and efficiency in older adults whose intake was low. Better sleep lowers the next day's cortisol and appetite; that is the whole route from magnesium to your waist, and it only runs if your intake was short. The authorised claims are the honest description: normal psychological function, reduction of tiredness and fatigue, normal energy-yielding metabolism.

Which magnesium, and how to take it during a cut

Glycinate, because a cut is when the gut is least forgiving and citrate's laxative effect is unwelcome. The worked example, Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate, gives 300mg elemental from 1500mg chelated bisglycinate in 2 capsules, 80% NRV, no calories, from a vegan capsule made in the UK under GMP and BRC certification and third-party tested for heavy metals and microbiology, 180 capsules for £19.99, 22p a day. Take it with the evening meal, protect sleep, hold the deficit and let the deficit do the work. Which magnesium is best for cortisol belly is a question with an honest answer: none of them, and the 300mg elemental one is the right magnesium to be taking while you fix the things that are.

What to check on the label

  • No fat loss, belly fat, cortisol or detox claims; none are authorised.
  • Elemental magnesium 300mg per serving, 80% NRV printed.
  • Glycinate first; citrate's bowel effect is not fat loss.
  • Zero calories: capsules, not gummies or drinks.
  • Cost per day under 25p; cortisol-belly products charge £1 a day for magnesium oxide and a story.

Questions people also ask

Does magnesium reduce belly fat?

No. A 2021 meta-analysis of randomised trials found no meaningful effect on body weight or waist circumference.

Which magnesium is best for weight loss and cortisol?

None for either as a claim. Glycinate at 300mg elemental with the evening meal supports sleep while a deficit does the work. Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate: 22p a day.

Is cortisol belly real?

Raised cortisol does favour fat storage in the trunk, but the fat still comes from a calorie surplus. Sleep, alcohol and stress eating are the usual drivers.

Does magnesium glycinate help with stress eating?

Only indirectly, through sleep, where intake was low. It is not an appetite supplement.

What supplements reduce cortisol belly?

None have trial evidence for belly fat. A deficit, sleep, less alcohol and sensible training load do; magnesium keeps intake at the reference level while you do them.
