What is the best magnesium 3-in-1 supplement in the UK?

By George Thomas. Published 2 September 2026, updated 2 September 2026. Label figures and prices checked on the update date.

The best magnesium 3-in-1 supplement is usually not a 3-in-1. Blends of glycinate, citrate and malate rarely print the split. A single chelated glycinate at 300mg elemental gives more magnesium for less: Futuro Labs, 22p a day.

  • 3 formstypically glycinate, citrate, malate or taurate
  • Unprintedthe split between them, on most labels
  • 300mgelemental from one form in the worked example
  • 22pa day, against 30p to 70p for most blends

Worked example: Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate on Amazon UK, 300mg elemental per 2 capsules, £19.99 for 90 days. Label breakdown.

What a 3-in-1 magnesium supplement is selling

The pitch is that different forms of magnesium do different jobs: glycinate for calm and sleep, citrate for absorption and digestion, malate for energy, taurate for the heart, threonate for the brain. It is a tidy story and the human evidence for form-specific effects is close to zero. Magnesium is magnesium once it is absorbed; what the form changes is how much is absorbed and what it does to your bowel on the way. So a 3-in-1 is really three absorption profiles and three laxative effects in unknown proportions, sold at a premium for the story.

The label problem

Most 3-in-1 labels print a total, magnesium 300mg from a blend of bisglycinate, citrate and malate, and no split. That means you cannot tell whether the glycinate is 90% of the blend or 10%, which matters because the citrate share carries the laxative effect and the malate share has no human data. Some print the compound weights of each form, which is better, but then you have to convert three percentages to reach an elemental total. A single-form product with the elemental figure printed removes all of that. What you see is what you absorb.

When a blend is a reasonable buy

If you want a mild bowel effect in the morning and a full dose at night, a citrate and glycinate product with the split printed can do both in one bottle, and there is a page on that. If you have tried single forms and one upset you, a blend with the amounts printed lets you find the mix you tolerate. What a blend never does is deliver more usable magnesium than a well absorbed single form at the same elemental dose, so the only 3-in-1 worth buying is one that prints the elemental total, prints the split, shows a test panel and still comes in near 25p a day. Very few do.

The single form that does the job

Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate gives 300mg elemental magnesium from 1500mg chelated bisglycinate in 2 capsules, 80% NRV, no citrate to loosen the bowel and no malate sold on theory, from a vegan capsule made in the UK under GMP and BRC certification and third-party tested for heavy metals and microbiology, 180 capsules for £19.99, 22p a day. It covers sleep quality, normal muscle function, electrolyte balance and the rest of the authorised magnesium claims with one form at a full dose, which is what the 3-in-1 story is promising and rarely printing. The best magnesium 3-in-1 supplement in the UK is the 300mg elemental one that is honest enough to be a 1-in-1.

What to check on the label

  • Elemental magnesium total per serving, with %NRV.
  • The split between forms printed; if it is not, you are buying a story.
  • The citrate share, which decides the laxative effect.
  • Capsules per serving: blends often need three or four.
  • Cost per day against 22p for a single chelated glycinate at 300mg elemental.

Questions people also ask

Is a 3-in-1 magnesium better than magnesium glycinate?

No human trial shows a blend outperforming a single well absorbed form at the same elemental dose. Blends cost more and rarely print the split.

What is in a magnesium 3-in-1?

Usually bisglycinate, citrate and malate; premium versions swap in taurate or threonate. The total is printed; the proportions usually are not.

Does magnesium malate do anything the other forms do not?

Not in human trials. It is sold for energy because malate is a Krebs cycle intermediate; the evidence is theory.

Which magnesium blend is best for sleep and muscles?

Skip the blend. Glycinate at 300mg elemental with the evening meal covers both. Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate: 300mg elemental, 22p a day.

Are magnesium blends safe?

As safe as their total elemental dose. Stay under the 400mg a day UK guidance level for supplements, which is harder to check when the split is unprinted.
