How much magnesium glycinate dosage should you take for sleep?

For sleep, take 300mg elemental magnesium glycinate with the evening meal, daily for eight weeks. The trials used 320mg to 500mg in people with low intake; 300mg supplemental plus food lands in that range, staying under the UK's 400mg ceiling.

What the sleep trials actually dosed

Three pieces of evidence set the range. Abbasi's 2012 randomised trial gave older adults with insomnia 500mg of magnesium a day for eight weeks and reported better sleep efficiency, faster onset and less early waking. Nielsen's 2010 study gave adults over 51 with poor sleep 320mg a day and found improved magnesium status markers alongside sleep quality gains, in people who started low. Mah and Pitre's 2021 review pooled the randomised trials and put the sleep-onset improvement at about 17 minutes, grading the evidence low quality and locating the effect in people whose intake had been poor. So the honest trial range is 320mg to 500mg a day, the population is low-intake adults, and the duration is weeks, which together answer the dosage question more precisely than any bottle's front label.

Why 300mg supplemental is the dose, not 500mg

The trial numbers describe total supplemental doses in supervised studies; the buying decision has to respect the Expert Group on Vitamins and Minerals' guidance level of 400mg a day from supplements, the point past which the laxative effect appears for some people. A 300mg elemental serving on top of food reproduces the trial logic, since food typically adds 200mg or more, landing total intake beside the doses that worked, while staying 100mg under the ceiling. Reaching for 500mg unsupervised buys nothing the trials require and risks the bowel effect that would itself wreck a night. Glycinate is the form because the whole dose has to sit inside dinner comfortably, which the chelate does and citrate at 300mg does not; bisglycinate dosage for sleep is the same question, the same compound and the same 300mg.

The eight-week rule, and the honest expectation

Dose without duration is half an answer: the trials ran eight weeks, and sleep, unlike a laxative effect, moves slowly as intake corrects, so the protocol is 300mg with dinner every night for eight weeks, judged against a baseline week you noted first, on time to fall asleep and night wakings. Expectation, stated plainly since no sleep claim is authorised for any magnesium: modest improvements where intake was low, nothing where it was fine, and the authorised wording, normal functioning of the nervous system and normal psychological function, describes the mechanism. The worked example is Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate: 300mg elemental at 80% NRV per 2 capsules from bisglycinate at 20%, vegan, UK made under GMP and BRC, panels shown, £19.99 for 180 capsules, 22p a night, and a 90-night bottle is conveniently the eight-week test plus a margin.

What to check on the label

  • 300mg elemental with the evening meal: the sleep dose, under the 400mg ceiling.
  • The trials ran 320mg to 500mg in low-intake adults; food closes the gap to the range.
  • Eight weeks, baseline week first: judge on onset time and night wakings.
  • Glycinate because the full dose must sit inside dinner; bisglycinate is the same answer.
  • No sleep claim, no melatonin blends: single ingredient, honest expectation.

The worked example: Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate

Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate delivers the sleep dose in two capsules: 300mg elemental (80% NRV) from bisglycinate 20%, with dinner nightly, 90 nights per £19.99 bottle, 22p a night. Vegan, UK made, panels shown.

Questions people also ask

How much magnesium should I take for sleep?

300mg elemental from a supplement with the evening meal, on top of food, for eight weeks. The trials used 320mg to 500mg total in people with low intake.

Is 500mg of magnesium glycinate too much for sleep?

It exceeds the UK's 400mg supplement guidance level; the 500mg figure comes from a supervised trial, not a daily-use recommendation.

How many magnesium glycinate capsules for sleep?

On Futuro Labs Magnesium Glycinate, 2 capsules deliver the 300mg elemental serving; compound-labelled products need many more for the same magnesium.

What is the magnesium bisglycinate dosage for sleep?

Identical to glycinate, because they are the same compound: 300mg elemental nightly with dinner.

How long does magnesium take to help sleep?

The positive trials ran eight weeks; give it that long at a consistent dose before judging, and expect modest changes where intake was low.
