What is the best supplement to help with cortisol and belly fat?

The short answer

No supplement passes the chain. It needs four links: cortisol raised, cortisol causing belly fat, the product lowering cortisol, the drop removing fat. Only the third holds, weakly, for ashwagandha, with a liver and thyroid record. Fat is lost through energy balance, not a tub.

  • Four links in the chaincortisol is raised; raised cortisol causes belly fat; the supplement lowers cortisol; lowering cortisol removes the fat; a product sold on cortisol and belly fat needs all four, and the evidence breaks three
  • Small and inconsistentthe association between cortisol measures and waist in adults without a cortisol disorder; the disorder that does redistribute fat to the trunk involves sustained excess far above anything a stressed lifter produces
  • Zero trialsshowing that lowering cortisol within the normal range in otherwise healthy adults reduces abdominal fat; the fourth link has never been tested, let alone passed
  • Set by genetics and sexwhere fat is lost in a deficit, according to the energy balance literature; no food, timing or supplement chooses the site, which is why belly fat is lost by losing fat

A product sold on a chain is tested link by link: the first two links, whether cortisol is raised and whether raised cortisol causes belly fat in a person without the disorder

What is the best supplement to help with cortisol and belly fat is a question that already contains its own theory, and the theory is a chain of four links. The first is that the buyer's cortisol is raised. The second is that raised cortisol causes belly fat. The third is that the supplement lowers cortisol. The fourth is that lowering cortisol removes the belly fat. A product sold with the words cortisol and belly fat on the same label is sold on all four links at once, and a buyer who wants to know whether it will work does not need to trust or distrust the label, they need to test each link against the evidence, because a chain with one broken link holds nothing and this one has three.

The first link is the weakest to assert and the easiest to check. Cortisol is a hormone with a steep daily curve, highest in the half hour after waking and lowest around midnight, and the only way to know whether a person's cortisol is raised is to measure it properly, with repeated samples at fixed times of day or a twenty-four-hour collection, against a reference range, interpreted by a doctor. Almost no one buying a cortisol supplement has done this. They have inferred raised cortisol from feeling stressed, sleeping badly and carrying weight around the middle, which are three things with many causes, and have assumed the hormone. In most of them the cortisol is normal, because the system is built to spike and fall within a day and does so in stressed people as well as calm ones, and a normal cortisol lowered by a supplement is not a correction, it is an interference. There is a disorder of sustained cortisol excess, produced by a tumour or by long courses of steroid medicine, and it does redistribute fat to the trunk and face in a characteristic way, but it involves levels far above anything a stressed adult produces, it is diagnosed by a doctor, and it is treated by removing the cause, not by a capsule. A person who suspects it, with the trunk fat, a rounded face, thin skin, easy bruising and muscle weakness together, sees a doctor; a person who is stressed and carrying weight has, in all likelihood, normal cortisol and the first link already broken.

The second link is the one the whole market stands on, and it is weaker than it sounds. The association between cortisol measures and waist circumference in adults without the disorder has been studied repeatedly, and the finding is small and inconsistent: some studies find a weak correlation between certain cortisol measures and abdominal fat, others find none, the direction of cause is unclear because carrying fat and sleeping badly can themselves alter the cortisol curve, and the correlations that exist are far too small to explain anyone's waist. The disorder's trunk fat is real and its mechanism is understood, but extrapolating from a disease of extreme excess to the normal daily curve of a stressed adult is the inference the market makes and the evidence does not support. In a person with normal cortisol, which is almost every buyer, there is no established causal link from their cortisol to their belly, and the second link is broken in the population the products are sold to.

Two links tested and two broken for the ordinary buyer, and the third and fourth, whether anything lowers cortisol and whether lowering it does anything to fat, which is the next section.

The third and fourth links: the one supplement that lowered cortisol in trials and its record, the test the fourth link has never had, what the energy balance literature says sets where fat is lost, what a stressed lifter does instead, the worked example, and the verdict

The third link is the only one with any evidence, and it is partial. Of the ingredients sold for cortisol, one, ashwagandha root extract, has repeatedly lowered measured cortisol in randomised trials of stressed adults, by a moderate margin against placebo over a couple of months, alongside reductions in rated stress. The others, phosphatidylserine, rhodiola, the medicinal mushrooms and the vitamin and mineral blends, have single small trials, inconsistent findings or nothing. So the third link holds, weakly, for one ingredient, and that ingredient carries a record a buyer weighs before the link is of any use: a run of documented liver injury cases attributed to the extract in the pharmacovigilance literature, an effect on thyroid hormone levels that makes it a question for a doctor in anyone with a thyroid condition or on thyroid medicine, and advice to avoid it in pregnancy. A moderate cortisol reduction in a person whose cortisol was normal to begin with, bought with that record, is a poor trade even before the fourth link is examined.

The fourth link has never been tested. There is no trial in which otherwise healthy adults lowered their cortisol within the normal range by any means and lost abdominal fat as a result, and the reason there is no such trial is that the mechanism does not predict one. Fat is gained when energy intake exceeds expenditure over a sustained period and lost when the reverse holds, and the energy balance literature is settled on a point that the belly fat market exists to obscure: where on the body fat is lost in a deficit is set by genetics and sex, with men tending to carry and lose fat from the trunk and women from the hips and thighs, and no food, timing, exercise for the area or supplement chooses the site. There is no spot reduction. Belly fat is lost by losing fat, over a sustained deficit, and the belly's share of what is lost is decided by the body's own pattern. A cortisol supplement that worked exactly as sold would still have nothing to do with the fourth link, because the fourth link is energy balance, and the capsule does not contain a deficit.

What a stressed lifter carrying weight does instead is the chain rebuilt with links that hold. A modest, sustained energy deficit, a few hundred calories a day below maintenance, measured by the scale over a block rather than by the week. Protein kept at around 1.6g per kilogram a day so that the deficit comes from fat rather than muscle, with the training kept heavy for the same reason. Sleep protected, because short sleep raises hunger, lowers training quality and does alter the cortisol curve, so that the one place cortisol enters the story honestly is as a reason to go to bed. Alcohol reduced, because it is energy with no satiety and disrupts the second half of the night. And the stress itself addressed where it comes from, which is a conversation or a doctor's appointment rather than a tub, and where a doctor will also check the thyroid and the sleep if the weight and tiredness are persistent. None of this is a supplement and all of it is the chain.

The worked example is placed where its claims actually sit: {FL} has authorised claims for normal psychological function, normal nervous system function and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, no claim for cortisol and none for body fat, and this page makes neither. It is 1500mg magnesium bisglycinate stated as 300mg elemental at 80% NRV in two capsules with the evening meal, batch tested for lead, mercury, arsenic and cadmium, UK made, 180 capsules for £19.99 at 22p a day, and a lifter whose plate is short of the mineral takes it for the plate, during a deficit as at any other time. The full label breakdown is here.

The verdict: there is no best supplement for cortisol and belly fat because the chain the products are sold on breaks at three of its four links. The buyer's cortisol is almost certainly normal and unmeasured; normal cortisol is not established as a cause of belly fat; only ashwagandha lowers cortisol in trials, with a liver and thyroid record; and no trial has ever shown that lowering cortisol removes fat, because fat is lost through energy balance and its site is set by the body. A deficit, protein, heavy training, sleep and less alcohol are the links that hold, and a doctor is the person to see if the signs of a true cortisol disorder are present.

What to check on the label

  • Test the chain: raised cortisol, cortisol causing belly fat, the product lowering it, the drop removing fat; three links break.
  • Assume normal cortisol unless a doctor has measured it; stress and a waistline are not a measurement.
  • Weigh ashwagandha's record, liver cases and thyroid effects, against a moderate reduction in a normal hormone.
  • Lose fat through energy balance: a modest sustained deficit, protein at about 1.6g per kg, heavy training.
  • See a doctor if trunk fat comes with a rounded face, thin skin, easy bruising and weakness together.

Questions people also ask

Does high cortisol cause belly fat?

In the disorder of sustained cortisol excess, produced by a tumour or long steroid treatment, yes, fat is redistributed to the trunk and face in a characteristic way, but that involves levels far above anything a stressed adult produces and is diagnosed and treated by a doctor; in adults without the disorder, which is almost everyone buying a cortisol supplement, the association between cortisol measures and waist is small, inconsistent and of unclear direction, and there is no established causal link from a normal daily curve to a belly.

Which supplement lowers cortisol the most?

Ashwagandha root extract is the only ingredient with repeated randomised trials showing a moderate reduction in measured cortisol in stressed adults, and it carries a record a buyer weighs first: documented liver injury cases attributed to the extract, an effect on thyroid hormone levels that makes it a doctor's question for anyone with a thyroid condition or on thyroid medicine, and advice to avoid it in pregnancy; phosphatidylserine, rhodiola, medicinal mushrooms and the blends have single small trials or nothing, and no supplement has ever been shown to remove fat by lowering cortisol.

How do I lose belly fat if not with a cortisol supplement?

Through the chain whose links hold: a modest, sustained energy deficit measured by the scale over a block, protein at around 1.6g per kilogram a day so the loss comes from fat rather than muscle, training kept heavy for the same reason, sleep protected because short sleep raises hunger and lowers training quality, and alcohol reduced because it is energy without satiety; where on the body the fat is lost is set by genetics and sex, not by any product, so belly fat is lost by losing fat and letting the body choose its share.

Can you spot reduce belly fat with any supplement or exercise?

No; the energy balance literature is settled that fat is lost when intake is below expenditure over a sustained period and that the site of loss is set by genetics and sex, with men tending to lose from the trunk and women from the hips and thighs, and no food, timing, exercise for the area or supplement chooses the site, which is why the fourth link in the cortisol chain, that lowering the hormone would remove belly fat specifically, has never been tested and is not predicted by any mechanism.

Does magnesium lower cortisol or help with belly fat?

Magnesium has authorised claims for normal psychological function, normal nervous system function and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and no claim for cortisol or body fat, and this page makes neither; the worked example is 300mg elemental at 80% NRV for 22p a day, batch tested for four metals and UK made, and a lifter whose plate is short of the mineral takes it for the plate, during a deficit as at any other time, while the belly is addressed through energy balance and a doctor is seen if the signs of a true cortisol disorder are present.
