Must-Have Powerlifting Equipment For Every Gym

1. Mirafit Heavy Duty Olympic Power Cage with Multi Grip Pull Up Bar

Your safety is of the utmost concern when powerlifting. Without a lifting cage, you won’t have a safety net if you accidentally go too heavy or slip up. It only takes one mistake to cause a serious injury. We chose the Mirafit because it was decently priced and because the full frame protects you from falling in all directions.

The Mirafit a very straightforward powerlifting rack and doesn’t come with many other exercise possibilities. However, the fact that you can adjust the height of the safety bars means you can do bench presses, deadlifts and more. It also comes with a pull-up and dip bar. You can choose whether you want the power cage in black or in a classic metal colour.

We recommend that you buy these weight plate storage bars to turn it into a weight rack as well as a lifting cage.

ProsCons
  • A full cage to properly isolate the bar in case of an accident
  • Relatively affordable for a power cage
  • Comes with added dip station and pull-up bars
  • Doesn’t have as many features as some other power cages
  • Need to buy separate weight plate storage bars (optional)

2. JLL® Coloured Olympic Bumper Weight Lifting Plates

Whether they fell by accident, because they were too heavy or because you threw them down after getting psyched up from a massive lift, weights have a tendency to drop. And when they drop, they drop hard. This can damage both the weights and the floor, plus it’s noisy.

Bumper plates like these from JLL® are made of solid rubber to dampen the noise and reduce possible damage. The rubber is also easier to grip and makes the plates safer to carry around. These are standard 2-inch plates and will fit any standard Olympic barbell.

You can purchase these weights separately, in sets of two or as a full set with two of each weight. The plates are colour coded so you can easily identify the different sizes. Their glowing reviews from scores of customers speak volumes.

This set might cost more than most others, but that should be expected from a product of superior quality.

ProsCons
  • Coloured so that you can easily identify different weights
  • Rubberized for extra grip when carrying and to minimize impact upon falling
  • Very expensive for a weight plate set

2. SteelBody Olympic Barbell Commercial Grade

If you really want to push the limits of your powerlifting, you need a barbell that can take the challenge. This means investing in a slightly higher grade barbell than what you would usually use. The SteelBody, with a maximum load of 725 kg, should be up to the task. This barbell is ultra-strong, yet it doesn’t sport a ridiculous price tag.

It’s a standard Olympic barbell, which means it weighs 20 kg, is 213 cm in length and has 2-inch ends for weights. It comes with precision thrust bearings for a smooth rotation of the ends even with mounted weights. It also has an impressive tensile strength of 160,000 Psi.

We thought that the bar offered plenty of stability with a good amount of whip. We also liked the anodized steel coating for both its appearance and for its ability to prevent scuffs or other damage. Although this barbell is a fantastic value for money considering its performance, it might be a bit pricey if you’re not a serious powerlifter.

ProsCons
  • Maximum weight load of 725 kg should be sufficient for all powerlifters
  • Precision thrust bearings for smooth rotation and to limit bounce
  • 160,000 Psi tensile strength means that this bar can take a beating
  • Anodized steel coating for a cool black look
  • Good price for a competition-level barbell
  • Might be a bit expensive for some home gyms

4. PROIRON Interlocking Floor Mat

A good floor mat protects the underlying floor from damage, keeps you from slipping and slightly cushions your joints from hard impact. One of the main reasons we picked this specific PROIRON mat is because it’s 2 cm thick. This makes it suitable for use with hefty weights.

The diamond plate texture is excellent at stopping you from slipping even if it’s a little wet from sweat or water. The high-density EVA foam used in the product also makes it easy to clean and boosts durability. This mat is tough enough to take on big gym equipment like treadmills, and it’s even suitable to be used outdoors.

As is often the case with interlocking floor mats, there are a few complaints about the pieces not fitting properly or separating during workouts. This is almost always the case, but this specific mat had the fewest of these complaints, which is another reason why we picked it.

ProsCons
  • 2 cm thick floor mat adequately protects your floor from the heaviest equipment
  • Texture provides excellent grip even when wet
  • Easy-to-clean foam
  • Interlocking pieces can slip apart when there is movement

5. Flexz Double Prong Powerlifting Belt

The last thing on your shopping list for the perfect powerlifting gym should be a powerlifting core belt. A proper powerlifting belt helps stabilize your core, protects you from injury and can stop you from getting a hernia. The Flexz is a powerful and sturdy belt that accomplishes all of these things.

The Flexz a 10 mm thick belt that offers plenty of support and is competition compliant. The double prong mechanism is extremely secure, so this belt won’t easily slip off during a workout. The material itself also grips to your clothes pretty tightly.

This is an extremely affordable belt as some similar products go for almost 5 times as much. It comes in solid black with white stitching. It isn’t too flashy, but it suits most tastes. You can choose from a number of sizes, so be sure to refer to the size guide.

ProsCons
  • 10 mm thick belt is the recommended thickness for serious powerlifters
  • The double-pronged belt buckle mechanism is extremely secure
  • Very affordable belt considering average prices in this category
  • No real disadvantages!

Conclusion

There you have it. These five products represent the best of the most important types of equipment you need in your powerlifting gym. Each one muscled out plenty of other items to become our recommendation to you.

We also tried to keep things affordable to cater to both those building a home gym and those stocking a fitness centre. The JLL® weight lifting plates are the only really pricey product we recommend, but it’s because they are just so awesome. The Flexz belt and SteelBody barbell both represent exceptional value for what you pay and would be just as welcome in either a home or commercial gym.

The Mirafit lifting cage and POIRON gym mats round off your new powerlifting arena. The great thing about the POIRON mat is that you can set your gym up inside or outside as long as you cover the other equipment.

You might still need a few optional extras like wrist wraps, grip powder and powerlifting shoes to complete your setup, so be sure to check out our reviews of the best of these products on the review section of our site.

We hope that this guide helps you get your gym started with the most fundamental items. If you’ve got the basics right, the rest should fall into place.
